Good mornin’!
Who we saw last & 1st has me saying,
“Keep my eyes…open…to who…is around me. Let me see the invisible.”
Our family spent the night at Trellis, a nice hotel in DT Kirkland – in a quaint and vibrant part of the city.
On our walk last night, the last person I talked with was (I now know) a veteran who was crossing the street at about 9p. Four hours early I’d seen him on a park bench enjoying the warmth of the sun on his face as he sat by the water. …
Crossing the street, I said “Hey, I remember you!”, and of course Doc directed the convo from there. …A convo that has left me pensive and curious, while he did not tell me he is “homeless”, as I connected the dots of his story and particular chosen words, it seems as though he is. …That said, it was a lovely conversation that kept me on my toes…He was tall, held his head up, was energetic, and was visibly grateful that Doc and I had stopped. …We stop all the time, but this was different.
…At 5:30a this morning, while still dark I took Doc outside to go potty. The streets are clean and pots are well manicured with flowers…it feels like a place you wanna be, and it feels safe (I don’t prefer to take Doc out in the dark).
But through the bushes, I see a woman quietly putting something in the trash bin then scurry off as fast and dignified as she could with a limp and a small bag in hand.
…We walked by the trash and I watched her from a distance as she went out of her way to take the route that would keep her the furthest away from us.
She was pretty far, but in the dark I saw her peek out from behind her wirey blonde hair and from a distance she saw…Doc…who had already (unusually) stopped & waited for her to notice. A student myself, I just watched this interaction and as he was wagging his tail I quietly yelled over, “Looks like he’d like to say hit to you, is that okay?”
She walked back and we walked toward her but it felt like she wanted a bench to separate us…it didn’t.
I can tell when Doc has an affinity for someone – he did for her. He started barking (he doesn’t usually do that) as he nuzzled up to her. …She was soaking it in, though it was a lot to take in first thing in the morning.
…She asked his name and she talked about his honorary PhD in love & kindess. Before she hobbled on in the dark & quiet of the morning she said, “He makes a good ambassador that’s for sure.”
…A sales guy at Nordstrom who I’ve known 17 years said yesterday as I was client shopping, “You have a glow.”
Couldn’t figure it out at 1st, but in part, I know it comes from Doc.
…To see my happy, sweet fur baby bring so much joy to others is – shocking to me and unexpected.
He reminds me to always “see people around me” and pause with whatever I have. On some days that might mean $, or a smile, or an ear, or a hug.
Doc reminds me that with him it can always be #time to allow him to pause …and wag his tail!
How can you “see” the people around you today?
